摘要 <p>The present invention relates to an apparatus and a method for preventing damage to a battery management system (BMS) and an ignition of a battery due to overheating during a balancing operation for equalizing cell voltages in a battery module including lithium based secondary battery (lithium ion, lithium polymer) cells. The apparatus for equalizing voltages of a battery according to an aspect of the present invention comprises a cell balancing control unit for determining a balancing duty and executing a discharging control if a cell requiring cell balancing is extracted after voltages of cells of a battery pack are detected; a cell balancing execution unit for discharging a voltage charged in the cell according to a cell balancing duty signal applied from the cell balancing control unit; and a temperature detection unit for monitoring the temperature of the cell balancing execution unit at any time to provide the monitored temperature to the cell balancing control unit, wherein, the cell balancing control unit determines the balancing duty based on a cell voltage deviation and the temperature of the cell balancing execution unit.</p>
