Provided are: a metal material, the wear resistance of which has been enhanced by hardening the surface layer; and a surface-hardening treatment method therefor. A metal material (40) obtained by subjecting a base metal to nitriding treatment and thereby hardening the surface layer of the base metal, wherein: a nitrogen compound layer (40C) is not formed in the surface layer of the base metal; and the Vickers hardness in a region spreading from the surface of the base metal to a depth of 78μm thereof is higher than that of the base metal by 5% or more. |
