The exciter has a shaft on which an eccentric weight is arranged, and a counter-rotating shaft that is located on an eccentric weight. The relative phase position of the eccentric weights is adjusted to one another. The relative angular positions between the eccentric weights and the associated shafts are adjusted independently from one another so that the relative phase position of the two eccentric weights is independently adjusted by angular adjustment of the eccentric weight. An actuating mechanism is provided for angular adjustment of the weight. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a method of performing a reverse drive with a vibration exciter; (2) a method for setting a forward drive with a vibration exciter; (3) a method for adjusting a stationary vibration with vibration exciter; (4) a method for performing a stationary vibration with a vibration exciter; (5) a method for performing thrust shaking with a vibration exciter; and (6) a method for performing a forward motion to a vibration generator.
