Class 100(1) A machine for winding paper comprising two winding stations 5, 6 and a device 21 for cutting a web of paper when the rolls attain a predetermined size is characterized by a switching tongue 19 which guides the free end of the web alternately to one of the two winding stations each provided with a plurality of rotatably driven rollers which, as the rolls increase in size, are swung away from stationary rotatable ' rollers driven in the same direction. As shown, a web 3 is unwound from a roll 4 by feed rollers 1, 2. Each winding station comprises four rollers, two rollers 7, 8 being rotatable about fixed axes, while rollers 9, 10 included in the station 5 and rollers 11, 12 included in the station 6 are carried by pivoted arms 13 and 14 respectively. The web 3 is guided by the tongue 19 into the station 5 through rollers 9, 16, the tongue 19 being pivotally mounted on the shaft 18 of the roller 16. The cutting device 21 is formed on the end of the. tongue 19 such that it cooperates with anvils 22, 23, when rocked by an armature 26 actuated by electromagnets 24, 25. The circuits including the electromagnets 24, 25 are closed by contacts 28, 29 and 30, 31, these contacts being opened by pins 32, 33 on the arms 13, 14 respectively. Downwardly inclined rollerways 34 guide completed rolls from the station 5 to a container 36, while a channel 37 allows rolls from the station 6 to slide axially on to an inclined plane 39 and into a container 40. In operation, as the diameter of a roll being wound in the station 5 increases the arms 13 are swung counterclockwise, the pin 32 eventually forcing the contacts 28, 29 apart such that the armature - 26 rocks the tongue 19 counterclockwise; thus the web 3 is cut by the device 21, the free end of the web being guided along the upper surface 20 of the tongue 19 to a feed roller 17 and the rollers 7, 8, 11 and 12. The arms 13 are swung into a horizontal position to permit the completed roll 35 to roll down the rollerways 34. In a modification, the tongue 19 has a guide roller and an inclined guide plate, while the cutting device is separate. In a further modification, the web 3 is fed mainly vertically and the tongue 19 has resilient metal strips 59 to guide the web.
