The present invention provides various kinds of methods to receive and update system data used for machine-to-machine (M2M) communication in a wireless access system supporting M2M; and the devices thereof. According to the present invention, a method of receiving system data for an M2M device in a wireless access system supporting M2M communication includes: a step where an M2M device receives a first second secondary super-frame header sub packet 3 (S-SFH SP3) message including transmission period data with which a second S-SFH SP3 message including M2M-exclusive ranging data is sent; a step where the M2M device receives the second S-SFH SP3 message based on the transmission period data; and a step where, if the M2M-exclusive ranging data included in the second S-SFH SP3 message indicates that the system data for M2M communication is updated, the M2M device receives a system configuration descriptor message including the updated system data.
