PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer and a printing method that even though a printed object elongates and contracts in the width direction while printing on the printed object using each printing unit, can automatically correct elongation and contraction in the width direction of the printed object in a short time and reduce a printing loss required for adjustment.SOLUTION: On the basis of detection information of a plurality of register marks detected by a register mark detection section (a register mark detector), width-wise misregister quantity of a printed object in at least two different locations in the width direction of the printed object (a web W) are individually calculated, and then an elongation/contraction amount in the width direction of the printed object is calculated on the basis of the plurality of calculated width-wise misregister quantity and variables of tension of the printed object is calculated based on the elongation/contraction amount. Based on the calculated variables of tension of the printed object, tension of the printed object disposed at a location further upstream in the feed direction of the printed object than a printing unit provided with the register mark detection section is changed.
