The apparatus (6) has an N-phase electric machine (7) comprising a stator that is provided with a number of phase strands for producing phases of a total magnetic rotary field of the stator. An inverter (8) provides alternating currents (AC) for the phase strands of the stator. The inverter comprises phase half-bridges for providing the AC at output terminals of the inverter. The phase strands of the stator comprise two separately energizable partial windings for producing the phases, where the partial windings are electrically coupled with the different output terminals of the inverter. The N-phase electric machine is designed as a brushless direct current (DC) motor. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an N-phase electric machine.
