The invention relates to methods for breaking down water and can be used in power engineering for recovery of carbon dioxide and for producing hydrogen. The proposed method for breaking down water with effective recovery of carbon dioxide and economic production of hydrogen comprises stages in which: the starting reagents: water and carbon dioxide, are fed under pressure into at least one reactor in the form of a hermetically sealed container containing a catalyst; a chemical reaction of the starting reagent mixture is carried out in the presence of the catalyst; hydrogen, oxygen and other products forming during the chemical reaction pass downstream of the reactor into at least one separator; the reaction products are separated from the starting reagents and intermediate reaction products in the separator, with hydrogen being released from the gaseous phase.
