A reference electrode for use in making pH measurements comprises an electrode stem 5, containing an electrolyte such as saturated potassium chloride, and provided with a small opening 15 at the lower end, a cooling jacket 6 surrounding the upper portion of the stem with inlet and outlet openings 7 and 8 for the passage of cooling medium, an electrolyte reservoir 11 joined to the upper end of the stem, a half cell 10 positioned within the reservoir 11 and conductor means for electrically connecting the half cell in a pH measuring circuit. The half cell is preferably of the calomel type plugged with fibrous material 22 between calomel 21 in the form of a paste or dry mixture and a small amount of potassium chloride crystals 23. A ball-point 26 provided at the end of a platinum wire 25 is immersed in the mercury 20. The electrode is suitable, particularly for measuring the pH or hydrogen ion concentration of solutions under conditions where the electrode is exposed to a temperature substantially above 160‹ C. and pressures above 120 lb. per sq. in. |
