Polyesterurethanes for impregnating non-woven fabric to produce a leather-like material are made by reacting 1.2 to 2.0 mols. of organic diisocyanate with 1.0 mol. of a polyester comprising a glycol reacted with an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid, the said polyester having a molecular weight from 500 to 10,000. Specified organic di-isocyanates are hexamethylene, 1,5-naphthylene, di-phenyl methane-p,p1, triphenyl methane-p,p1, metatolylene, phenylene and benzidene diisocyanates. Specified glycols are ethylene, propylene, di-ethylene, tetramethylene, pentamethylene and octamethylene glycols. Specified aliphatic dicarboxylic acids are adipic, succinic, maleic, fumaric, methyl succinic, di-, tri- and tetra-methyl succinic, pimelic, glutaric, suberic, azelaic and sebacic acids. Bifunctional amine-containing reactants may also be included in the polyester-forming mixture, e.g. ethanolamine, aminobutanol, ethylene diamine or tetramethylene diamine. The impregnating solution comprises the polyesterurethane dissolved in a solvent, e.g. benzene, toluene, chlorobenzene, isopropyl acetate, methyl ethyl ketone, acetone, methyl isobutyl ketone, nitromethane or cyclohexanone and a colorant, e.g. a mixture of yellow iron oxide, red iron oxide and channel black may be added. Examples, describe the preparation of polyesterurethane by reacting hydroxyl poly (ethylene adipate) with paraphenylene di-isocyanate. Curing of the polyesterurethane may be accelerated by triethylamine or pyridine. |
