PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a silicon carbide sintered body which can be obtained safety in terms of environmental hygiene and has an excellent sintering property; and a method of producing the same.SOLUTION: The production method comprises steps of: preparing a slurry by adding carboxymethylcellulose to silicon carbide ceramic as a carbon source; forming a compact using the slurry; and calcinating the compact in a non-oxidative atmosphere. Carboxymethylcellulose used as a carbon source is, unlike carbon black, soluble in water, has thickening, swelling, and dispersing effects for aqueous solutions, and can suppress flotation and sedimentation of each powder and homogenize the same. By substituting all or a portion of the carbon source with carbon derived from carboxymethylcellulose, addition of carbon black can be stopped or reduced. As a result, the carbon source is dispersed uniformly, and suppression of aggregation becomes possible and, further, pores which are formed in the sintered body due to aggregation decreases. |
