The method involves providing an electrochemical energy storage device (2), and stimulating the storage device with a predetermined current at a pre-defined time. The voltage response of the storage device is measured when excited by an excitation device (11) with the predefined current at pre-defined time. An internal resistance of the storage device is calculated by a computing device (13) based on the measured voltage response and the predefined power. The state of charge of the storage device is determined based on the calculated internal resistance value. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for monitoring state of charge of an electrochemical energy storage device (2) a battery management system with lithium ion battery.
