In making a mat for filtering liquids, an aqueous pulp comprising a mixture of natural organic and inorganic fibres and synthetic fibres, which synthetic fibres have a maximum thickness of 10 microns, is deposited on a foraminous support, water is allowed to drain away and the mat is dried. The average length of the majority of the fibres, particularly the synthetic fibres, is preferably less than 1.5 mm. The synthetic fibres may constitute up to 50% of the weight of the mixture of fibres. The inorganic fibres may be asbestos fibres. The wet, drying or dried mat may be compressed, e.g. between rollers, and heated and one or both of its surfaces may be roughened, as by brushes or profile milling cutters. |
