The device has a control device (21) including a switching element (23) operated in generator position, and booster position in which an electric machine (1) i.e. motor, is decoupled from an engine (3). The control device resets the element in regular mode for set time to create moment of freedom between first and second shaft portions (9, 11). The control device detects speed of the shaft portions and performs emergency resetting of the element in emergency mode if speed of the first shaft portion drops by a predetermined difference in speed with respect to speed of the second shaft portion. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a hybrid drive device for a motor vehicle.
