1. A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle comprising:
an engine; an electric machine having a torque limit; a battery having a charge-depletion-to-charge-sustaining transition threshold and an initial state of charge at a beginning of a trip greater than the threshold; and at least one controller programmed to operate the engine and electric machine such that a state of charge of the battery achieves approximately the threshold after the vehicle has been driven, during the trip, a distance greater than a specified distance, wherein the specified distance is a total distance the vehicle could have been driven exclusively by the electric machine until the state of charge achieves approximately the threshold while a total torque demand remains less than or equal to the torque limit.
