An apparatus and a method for selecting a path in a broadband wireless communication system are provided to select a path by using a transmission rate with respect to a base station-terminal link and a relay-terminal link and a queue state of a base station and a repeater. A base station selects one of modes for path selection(600). The base station receives a report on an SNR(Signal-to-Noise Ratio) value obtained by measuring a radio channel state between the base station and a terminal and between a relay station and the terminal from the terminal(602). If the base station needs to receive the SNR value between the base station and the relay station(604), it receives the same from the relay station(606). If the SNR between the base station and the relay station is not required, the base station calculates a data transmission rate between the base station and the terminal and between the relay station and the terminal by using the reported SNRs between the base station and the terminal and between the relay station and the terminal(610). The base station determines whether to transmit data through a direct path from the base station or by way of the relay station(612). The base station transmits information about the determined data transmission path to the relay station and the terminal(614). |
