A method for determining the relative distance and/or the relative movement between at least two traffic participants, in particular between at least two vehicles, wherein, upon the receipt of acoustic interrogation emissions from a first traffic participant, (active) reaction emissions are triggered, after a predetermined delay, from a second traffic participant, the reaction emissions are then received and evaluated by the first traffic participant. The delay is set such that passive reflections of the interrogation emissions from nearby objects have dissipated. The acoustic duration, frequency and/or frequency progression of the reaction signals may be known to both vehicles. The reaction (return) beam may be modulated and include information about the time delay, signal duration, frequency and/or frequency progression. An independent claim is included for a device which determines the relative distance and/or the relative movement between at least two traffic participants, in which an embodiment is shown whereby the device is not located in either of the traffic participants. |
