Class 123(2) In a supercritical pressure, once-through steam boiler comprising a conduit 12 divided into water and steam heating sections 15, 16 respectively and into which a pump 10 forces water at supercritical pressure, dissolved solids in the water are caused to deposit in a predetermined position 18 between the heating sections by so regulating the pump flow and the heat input rate into the fluid, the latter by using tilting burners, gas recirculation &c., that at said position the fluid attains its critical specific volume when the precipitation of the solids occurs. The temperature and pressure distribution in the conduit is indicated by instruments 19, 20, the control adjustments being made manually or automatically to attain the required conditions at the position 18. In a modification the deposition of solids is arranged to occur in an unheated by-pass pipe in which a pressure-reducing valve is located, the fluid attaining its critical specific volume as it passes through the valve.
