A method of capturing a still frame is disclosed. The method generally includes the steps of (A) generating a plurality of initial frames with a sensor in response to an optical signal and (B) generating the still frame by combining the initial frames using a noise reduction technique.

1. A device comprising:
a memory configured to store a plurality of initial frames; and a filter circuit configured to generate a still frame by combining a first, a second, and a third of said initial frames using a noise reduction technique, wherein said filter circuit is further configured to motion compensate said initial frames such that said still frame is temporally aligned with a center frame of said initial frames, said first initial frame is generated temporally after said second initial frame, said first initial frame is motion compensated prior to combining with said second initial frame using a plurality of motion vectors corresponding to said first initial frame, and said plurality of motion vectors are generated using said second initial frame as a reference.
