FIELD: physics, optics.SUBSTANCE: invention relates to light engineering and specifically to a variable colour light emitting device (100; 200; 300; 400) comprising at least one light source (101; 201; 303; 401) and at least one deformable element (102; 202; 301; 402). The deformable element (102; 202; 301; 402) comprises particles of at least one wavelength converting material (103; 203; 305; 403), wherein the deformable element (102; 202; 301; 402) is arranged to receive light from the at least one light source (101; 201; 303; 401) and to convert it into light of another wavelength. Since the element comprising the wavelength converting material is deformable, the thickness of the element can be varied.
