The method involves determining a pressure difference between a tank inner space and the surrounding of a motor vehicle, and determining a reduction of ambient pressure. A gaseous fluid is derived from a fuel tank (2) through a filter (22), if the pressure difference between the tank inner space and the surround of the motor vehicle exceeds a pressure threshold and if the reduction of the ambient pressure exceeds the ambient pressure threshold. The fuel temperature of the fuel (4) is determined in the fuel tank. An independent claim is included for a fuel tank-pressure suppression system for decomposing the pressure in a fuel tank of a fuel tank system of a motor vehicle.
