<p>Organic compounds which form solid nitration products are continuously nitrated by mixing the starting material with nitric acid, sulphuric acid and a solvent for the nitration product, pumping the resulting liquid reaction mass through a heat exchanger for effecting the reaction, withdrawing the reaction mass from the heat exchanger, withdrawing a lesser portion of said reaction mass and pumping it to a separator for separating the solution of the nitration product from the waste acid, recirculating the residual reaction mass through the heat exchanger and introducing further reaction mass into the circulating stream to maintain the volume substantially constant. The process may be effected in the apparatus of Specification 919,717. An exemplified process nitrates 2,4-din tromethylaniline using dichloroethane as solvent to produce tetryl. Other specified starting compounds are benzene, substituted benzenes, naphthalene, substituted naphthalenes, alkyl benzenes, substituted polyalkyl benzenes, styrene, pyridine, aminopyridines, picolines, aminopicolines, quinolines, heterocyclic compounds and substituted heterocyclic compounds which form solid nitration products. Specified products are tetryl (2,4,6 - trinitrophenylmethylnitramine) pentaerythritol tetranitrate, pentaerythritol trinitrate, trinitrophenol, nitroguanidine, trinitroresorcinol and nitrated dye intermediates.
