The device has a charging current information device (6) positioned in a motor car (2) for generating internal charging current information. A charging current-limiting device (8) limits the charging current as a function of internal load power information to a limit value, which lies below the maximum possible charging current value. The limiting device is adapted to change the threshold value in dependency of the internal charge current information received from the information device, where the internal charging current information is generated partially in the motor car. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling the charging of an energy storage device of a motor car.
