The apparatus (1) has a probe (10) designed as a back-up roll and provided with a measurement surface (100) that exhibits a cylindrical shape in a contact zone with cylinders. An extension (21) is radially movable relative to the measurement surface of the probe. A measurement surface of another probe (20) exhibits a spherical or ellipsoidal shape around a translation axis (T2) or the cylindrical shape in a contact zone with the cylinders, where a diameter of the measurement surface of the latter probe is lesser than a diameter of the measurement surface of the former probe. An independent claim is also included for a method for measuring a minimal distance between two external surfaces of revolution cylinders.
