The method involves driving a high-pressure pump with which a fuel is pumped into a rail, with a suction throttle such that the pressure in the rail is controlled with a pressure regulator. The pressure values measured in the rail is compared with a target pressure, and a pressure control signal for the suction throttle is determined.The suction throttle is driven with the control signal. The high pressure pump associated with the suction throttle is divided into multiple units, and each unit is controlled by a separate control loop. An independent claim is included for a control device for controlling a pressure in a rail of an internal combustion engine.
