A catalyst for the dehydrogenation of hydrocarbons comprises a major proportion of zinc oxide, a minor proportion of an oxide of iron, manganese, chromium, cobalt, or nickel, and a small amount of potassium or sodium oxide. A stabilizer may also be present, consisting of a non-acidic oxide of a metal other than the alkali and alkaline earth metals, and an addition of 1 per cent. of silica gel is advantageous. The hydrocarbons treated may be mono-olefins or aralkyls with at least two carbon atoms in the alkyl group. They may be diluted with 1-30 volumes of steam and treated at 1,000-1,600 DEG F. |
