The positive plate of a lead-acid battery comprises a lead grid consisting of a frame 1 and vertical or horizontal or (as shown) diagonal bars 5, to one or each side of which is applied a microporous synthetic resin grid 2 having hexagonal openings containing the active paste 7 and sealed by a separator 9 of glass fibre or fabric. To prevent corrosion at points 10 where the bars 5 are cast to the frame and at points 11 where they contact the grid 2, the latter is compressed at these positions to be no longer microporous. Circular (or rectangular, Figs. 5 and 6, not shown) lugs 6 serve to increase the contact surface between the paste 7 and bars 5. The negative plate is similarly constructed with the resin grid having circular openings covered by flat or corrugated microporous separators, Figs. 7 ... 12 (not shown). |
