A combination lock with a code number setting knob adapted to unlock the lock by alternative rotation of the knob in opposite directions and by thus consecutively setting a rotatable graduated disc to predetermined numbers, comprises means for operatively coupling the setting knob with the graduated disc when the knob has been rotated in the prescribed direction the prescribed number of times corresponding to each number of the code. To unlock the connection lock knob c is turned anti-clockwise, as shown in Fig. 1, causing lug c to engage in slot d of entraining ring d so that on further rotation of the knob c lugs d 2 , e 1 , f 1 , g 1 , of rings d, e, f, g consecutively abut teeth e 2 f 1 g 2 h 2 respectively. Finally as the lug g engages the tooth h 2 , the tooth h 1 raises a pawl i and forces a tooth i 1 into engagement with the tooth h 2 and the knob c is set against the first appropriate number of the code. Knob c is then turned in the opposite direction until the tooth g 2 is engaged with the pawl k, and it can then be moved to a second setting position. These rotations in opposite directions are continued, picking up one less ring at each rotation in the same direction, until the disc b is entrained by the knob c when the required number of the disc b is then turned into register with the index mark, and the lock may be opened. For resetting to the numbers of a different code the appropriate numbers are selected in sequence, the setting process being stopped at the last number. A re-setting key is then introduced into the lock and moved through 90 degrees to adjust the lock to the new code. The new digits are set by reverse rotations of the setting knob and locking them with the re-setting key.</p> |
