The method involves driving the internal combustion engine with the aid of a starter (150). A fuel-air mixture is ignited in a primary-combustion cylinder. A dropping of the starter is released depending on a voltage curve of an on board supply system which supplies the starter with electrical energy. The dropping of the starter is released when a gradient of the voltage curve undershoots a predetermined gradient threshold value after an initial voltage drop. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a computer program for executing the internal combustion engine starting method; and (2) an electrical storage medium for a control- and regulating unit of an internal combustion engine.
