The method involves utilizing an engine controller (1), a data memory (2) and a fuel quality detection unit (3), which are arranged in a motor vehicle. The fuel quality detection unit detects a currently used fuel quality (4) in a form of fuel data for a mixture formation (6). The fuel data (5) passes through and used by the engine controller. The engine controller computes the mixture formation by using a physical model (7).
