This photoelectric conversion element is provided with: an organic photoelectric conversion film; a first electrode and a second electrode, which are arranged so as to sandwich the organic photoelectric conversion film; and a charge blocking layer which is arranged between the second electrode and the organic photoelectric conversion film. The charge blocking layer comprises: a work function adjusting layer which contains a metal element for adjusting the second electrode-side work function of the organic photoelectric conversion film; and a first diffusion suppressing layer which is arranged between the work function adjusting layer and the second electrode so as to suppress diffusion of the metal element toward the second electrode.
