The fuel cell system (1) has a fuel cell (2) that is provided with an anode chamber (3) and a cathode space (4). A passive valve (11) is arranged between an output unit of the anode chamber and an input unit of the cathode space. The passive valve is set to permit the flow of exhaust gas from the anode chamber into the cathode space based on the pressure in the anode chamber and cathode space. The passive valve is provided with a valve seat (13) and a valve portion (12). The valve portion is lifted by a spring element (14) against the flow of the exhaust gas from the valve seat.
