Wire handling apparatus comprises a hollow stationary take-up block; a rotatable flyer and drive means operative to rotate the flyer about the block to wrap wire around one end of the block for removal in coil form from the other end of the block; and a fluid circulating and cooling system mounted on the block and operative to circulate fluid coolant through the block thereby to extract heat from it and from the wire wrapped around it and to cool the thus heated fluid for recirculation through the block. Heated wire W, for eaxmple heated consequent upon a drawing action, passes through a bore 15 of a rotating flyer shaft 2, over pulleys 21, 19 carried by a flyer 16 to be laid around a take-up block 20 having a slightly tapered external surface. Thus the comolutions of wire wrapped on the block are moved axially therealong and on to a horn 31, which may comprise curved rods 32 secured at one end to the block 20, to fall therefrom to a drum. The block 20 is held stationary by a gear 25 thereon meshing with a pinion 26 on a shaft 27 journalled in the flyer 16 and carrying at its other end a pinion 28 rolling on a fixed gear 29. A rotary pump 42 on the block 20 and driven by the flyer shaft 2 circulates cooling fluid, e.g. water or oil from a reservoir 40 through a pipe 36 to a helical cooling passage 35 in the block. The heated coolant then passes through a pipe 37 to a radiator 38, comprising a finned tube 45 coiled inside a sheet metal housing 44 of the horn 31, and back to the reservoir 40. Cooling air may be blown from a housing 47 around the outside of the block 20 at 48 and through the block at 49, 50 over radiator tubing 45. Wire drawing dies may be disposed in advance of the take-up block assembly or a die may be mounted on the flyer 16 between the block 20 and pulley 19 or between the pulleys 19 and 21.
