<p>The present invention relates to a sewing machine that stably detects a seam allowance. A sewing machine (100) includes a main feed mechanism (20) and a lateral feed mechanism (30, 50) that feed a workpiece cloth (CU, CD) in crossing directions (X, Y), a cloth edge detecting device (40, 60) that detects a seam allowance of the workpiece cloth (CU, CD), and a control section (13) that controls the lateral feed mechanism (30, 50) such that the seam allowance has a target width. The cloth edge detecting device (40, 60) includes a light source (42, 62), and a detection section (45, 65) having a plurality of light receiving elements arranged along the workpiece cloth width direction (X) and detects the position of the cloth edge in the workpiece cloth width direction (X) of the workpiece cloth (CU, CD) from irradiation light blocked by the cloth edge of the workpiece cloth (CU, CD).
