PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To favorably reduce the amount of hydrogen leaking to an anode side after an operation stop, and to execute favorable water electrolysis treatment by preventing deterioration of a catalyst electrode. SOLUTION: In this method for stopping the operation of a high-pressure water electrolysis device, power feeding bodies are arranged on both sides of an electrolyte membrane, oxygen is generated on an anode side by electrolyzing water by applying electrolysis voltage between the power feeding bodies, and hydrogen having high voltage relative to that of the oxygen is generated on a cathode side. The method for stopping the operation includes processes of: stopping the application of the electrolysis voltage between the power feeding bodies; cooling the high-pressure water electrolysis device by supplying a cooling medium into the high-pressure water electrolysis device in a state where the application of the electrolysis voltage is stopped; and depressurizing at least the cathode side.
