A conjugated diolefin is polymerized using as catalyst a divalent nickel or cobalt halide or nitrate together with an organo-metal compound in the presence of at least 0,2 times of the conjugated diolefin of a vinyl cycloolefin containing a vinyl group attached to a saturated ring carbon atom present in an alicyclic hydrocarbon radical containing a double bond which is not conjugated with the vinyl double bond. Specified diolefine are butadiene (preferred) 2,3-dimethyl or diethyl butadiene, isoprene, 4-methylhexadiene, 2-methylpentadiene, 2-isopropylbutadiene, octatriene, 2-amylbutadiene and piperylene, and their mixtures, e.g. butadiene-isoprene. Specified catalysts are cobaltous and nickelous bromide, fluoride and iodide and nickel and cobalt nitrate. Specified organometallic compounds are aluminium triethyl, triisobutyl, tributyl, triisopropyl, diisobutyl sesquihalide, diethyl hydride, butyl dichloride and triamyl. Specified cycloolefins are 1-vinyl-4-methyl-cyclohexene 3, 1,3-dimethyl-1-vinylcyclohexene-3, 1-vinylcyclohexene-3, 1-vinylcyclopentene-3, 1-vinylcyclobutene-2, linonene, 3,5-diethyl-1-vinylcyclopentene-2 and mixtures thereof. The process may take place in a solvent such as the vinylcycloolefin, benzene, toluene or xylene.
