A catalyst for polymerizing an a b -ethylenic dicarboxylic acid polyester with a /> C=CH2 monomer comprises a fibrous material having discrete coatings of an ester-free of ethylenic unsaturation-of a saturated dicarboxylic acid with an alcohol, said coatings containing an organic peroxide catalyst or gelation promoter. The ester may be derived from a monohydric alcohol and an aromatic dicarboxylic acid, or it may be a polyester of a glycol and an aromatic and/or aliphatic dicarboxylic acid. The catalyst may be the usual peroxide, hydroperoxide or peracid; the gelation promoter may be a Co, Ni or Pb salt such as Co oleate or naphthenate, or, e.g. thioglycollic acid, dimethylanidine or trimethylbenzylammonium chloride. The fibrous material is preferably composed of glass fibres, but polyamide, polyacrylonitrile, polyvinyl chloride, mineral wool, rock wool and asbestos are also mentioned. Glass fibrous materials may include coatings comprising, e.g. starch, vinyl acetate, polysilicates, Werner C+ complexes and interpolymers of unsaturated polyester/monomer (e.g. styrene, diallylphthalate).ALSO:A catalyst for copolymerizing an a b -ethylenic dicarboxylic acid polyester with a >C=CH2 monomer comprises a fibrous material having discrete coatings of an ester-free of ethylenic unsaturation-of a saturated dicarboxylic acid with an alcohol, said coatings containing an organic peroxide catalyst or gelation promoter. The catalyst may be the usual peroxide, hydroperoxide or peracid; the gelation promoter may be a Co, Ni or Pb salt such as Co oleate or naphthenate, or, e.g. thioglycollic acid, dimethylaniline or trimethylbenzylammonium chloride. The fibrous material is preferably composed of glass fibres, but polyamide, polyacrylonitrile, polyvinyl chloride, mineral wool, rock wool and asbestos are also mentioned. Glass fibrous materials may include coatings comprising, e.g. starch, vinyl acetate, polysilicates, Werner Cr complexes and interpolymers of unsaturated polyester/monomer (e.g. styrene, diallylphthalate). Specified unsaturated polyester components are:- maleic anhydride and maleic fumaric, itaconic, orthotere- and isophthalic, adipic, azelaic and sebacic acids; and propylene, dipropylene, diethylene, trimethylene, triethylene and butylene glycols.
