PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which decreases a waiting time of a head after maintenance operation, and a head maintenance method. SOLUTION: In the image forming apparatus and the head maintenance method, maintenances of the heads 61BK, 61M, 61C and 61Y are performed using a maintenance means 70 moving back and forth in a region opposing the heads 61BK, 61M, 61C and 61Y, and when at least the maintenance means 70 moves backward in the region, the maintenances of the heads 61BK, 61M, 61C and 61Y are performed.
