The method involves determining internal resistance of a single cell (3) using a predetermined internal resistance function, and measuring cell voltage of the single cell. Cell temperature of the single cell is provided. Current flow through the single cell is determined depending on the internal resistance, cell voltage and the cell temperature by current detection function. Open circuit voltage is determined in currentless state of a battery device (2), and state of charge is determined depending on integration value of the current. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for detecting current flow through a battery device (2) a computer program product comprising a set of instructions for detecting current flow through a battery device.
