Thermoplastic halogen-containing polymers are stabilized by the addition of an alkyl nitrite. C1-8 alkyl nitrites are preferred and may be used in amounts of 0,3 to 5% by weight. Polymers specified are vinyl chloride homopolymers and copolymers containing at least 50% by weight of vinyl chloride. Specified comonomers are vinylidene chloride, vinyl acetate and acrylic esters. The nitrite may be added by direct physical mixing, by adding a solution of the nitrite to the polymer or a solution thereof or by addition of the nitrite to an aqueous emulsion or suspension of the polymer. |
