A predetermined volume of plasticized material is fed by a screw 150 past a valve 165 to an accumulation chamber 170 where it is stored under pressure, a predetermined portion of this material is ejected from this chamber through an injection or extrusion orifice, and the chamber 170 is then refilled with fresh plasticized material from the screw. Accurately metered quantities of material can thus be supplied. In Figs. 1, 5 (not shown) the material is delivered to the bore of a sleeve 161 containing an injection piston (not shown) while in Figs. 7, 8 (not shown) injection into a mould cavity 634 is effected by the pressure produced by a piston 172 in the chamber 170. First embodiment (Figs. 1, 5).-Material plasticized by the screw passes through passages 158, 166, 167 into the accumulation chamber 170 and pushes the piston 172 rearwardly against the pressure in a chamber 178. When this piston reaches the position shown in Fig. 5, the valve 165 is moved to its intermediate position (Fig. 5) to cut off the flow of plasticized material. To discharge the accumulation chamber, the valve 165 is moved to its third position (Fig. 6, not shown) and the piston 172 moved into the cylinder again. Material is thus forced through passages 171, 157 into the bore 160 until an adjustable nut 181 on a threaded extension 180 of the piston 172 comes into contact with a guide sleeve 183. The valve 165 is controlled by a fluid pressure cylinder 197 and piston 195, the intermediate position being determined by the piston-rod 201 of an additional piston 200 and cylinder 198. Movement of piston 172 is controlled by circuits (not shown) including pressure switches operated by the nut 181 and a collar 188. Second embodiment (Figs. 7, 8).-The valve 165 has an extension 625 comprising a grooved portion 627 (Fig. 8) and lands 626. As the piston 172 advances, material is forced through passages 171, 157, 637, 635, 636 and an injection orifice 633 into the mould. When the valve 165 is moved to the Fig. 8 position the extension 625 retains the material in the mould under pressure while the chamber 170 is being refilled.
