<p>Barium silicate is coated with a calcium, barium, strontium or magnesium salt of a fatty acid (C6-C24) preferably formed in situ. The coated silicate may be incorporated in a vinyl resin. Acids specified are capric, caproic, caprylic, lauric, myristic, oleic, stearic, linoleic, linolenic and behenic. Plasticizers such as triethylene glocol di-2-ethylbenoate, triethylene glycol dicaprate and triethylene glycol dilaurate, the latter obtained from coconut oil, may be added to the fatty acid or soap. Wetting agents such as morpholine and tri-ethanolamine may also be present during the coating process. According to examples, (1) barium silicate was prepared by reacting hydrochloric acid with a suspension of barium carbonate, and feeding this solution with aqueous sodium silicate to a large volume of water, then filtered, washed free of chloride, slurried in water and mixed with an emulsion formed by dissolving stearic acid in tri-ethylene glycol dilaurate and mixing with an aqueous solution of triethanolamine. The barium silicate slurry was filtered and dried, 1.25% barium stearate being present; (2) stearic acid was dissolved in sodium hydroxide and the sodium salt solution used to form the barium silicate coating; (5) hydrated barium silicate was treated with an emulsion of capric acid in aqueous triethanolamine. ALSO: Barium silicate coated with alkaline earth metal soaps of fatty acids containing at least 6 carbon atoms (see Division C1) is used in vinyl halide resin compositions to prevent stickiness. Vinyl halide resins specified are homopolymers of vinyl chloride, bromide fluoride and vinylidene chloride, and copolymers thereof with vinyl acetate, vinylidene halide, ethyl methacrylate and methyl methacrylate. Also present in the composition may be stabilizers e.g. lead, barium, cadmium, zinc and tin salts, and plasticizers, e.g. phthalates, adipates, azelates, sebacates, phosphates, ester epoxides, polyethylene glycol esters, and chlorinated paraffins.</p> |
