A liquid synthetic ester lubricating oil composition comprises a major proportion of an ester lubricating oil and 0.001 to 5.0 % wt. of an anhydride of a carboxylic acid. Esters oils included are diesters, complex esters, esters of glycols and polyglycols, and esters derived from polyhydric alcohols and monocarboxylic acids. All of these esters are extensively exemplified. Many anhydrides are specified including those of aromatic, alicyclic, aliphatic and alkaryl acids. The compositions may contain alkylene glycol titanates, various formulae for which are given, and several titanates are specified including those described in U.S.A. Specification 2,643,262. Optional additives also mentioned are phenothiazine, dioctyl phenothiazine, dioctyl diphenylamine, phenyl-a -naphthylamine, p - amino - diphenylamine, polymethacrylates, polystyrene, dimethyl silicone polymers and tricresyl phosphate. It is stated that in compositions containing both the anhydride and a titanate the two may react together under the influence of heat to form a complex. |
