The method involves compressing a carbon dioxide containing feed flow (3) to a pressure of 1-2.5 bar. Temperature of a smoke is reduced by exchanging heat with water under pressure in a heat exchanger (7) at a temperature of 10-90 degree Celsius. Heated water (11) coming from the exchanger is utilized as a source of heat. The heated water is utilized to preheat non-condensed gases of a collection unit and to purify carbon dioxide (21) before sending the carbon dioxide into a catalytic oxidation reactor or a turbine. The heated water is utilized to preheat oxygen produced by a separation unit.
