The method involves displacing a mobile unit (8) from an extreme closing position to an extreme open position. The acceleration of the mobile unit at intermediate positions between the extreme positions is determined by deriving a position signal from a position sensor (16) of the mobile unit. An intermediate position at which the acceleration is equal to zero is detected. A value corresponding to a distribution clearance is determined within a control unit (23) of an actuator (6). The value is transmitted to an external device e.g. diagnostic tool (25).
