PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fuel cell that has a flat porous support substrate with gas passages formed thereinside and that prevents cracks in "lateral end insulating films" that cover lateral ends of the support substrate.SOLUTION: A fuel cell is a fired body including: a flat porous support substrate 10 that is made up of a porous insulating ceramic material not including Ni and that has a plurality of gas passages 11 formed thereinside along a longitudinal direction thereof; and a power generating element section that is provided on a main surface of the support substrate 10 and that has at least a fuel electrode, a solid electrolyte, and an air electrode, laminated in that order. The support substrate 10 has a pair of lateral ends extending along a longitudinal direction thereof. The lateral ends are respectively covered by dense lateral end insulating films 45 that are lower in porosity than the support substrate 10 and that consist of a material having the same composition as that of the support substrate 10. The lateral end insulating films 45 each have a surface roughness (arithmetic average roughness Ra) of 0.13 to 5.2 μm, and have a thickness of 3 to 45 μm. |
