PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical system for solar energy to generate electrical energy.SOLUTION: An optical system comprises: an aplanatic imaging system; a non-imaging solar concentrator coupled to the aplanatic system; and a multi-junction solar cell for receiving highly concentrated light from the non-imaging solar concentrator. The aplanatic optical imaging system may comprise a primary mirror and a secondary mirror. The aplanatic optical imaging system may comprise at least one of the secondary mirror with a co-planar entrance aperture and the primary mirror with an exit aperture which is co-planar with a vertex. A dielectric may be disposed in space between the primary mirror and the secondary mirror.
