A plansifter, to which material to be treated is fed at 11, consists of an assembly of four screen compartments 30 and an inspection compartment 20 located between a head compartment 10 and a base compartment 40. Passages 1-8, which receive various grades of screened material, are circumferentially spaced within an annular chamber between walls 31, 32, and aspirating air passes upwardly through these passages to carry off dust &c. before each grade falls to its separate outlet 41. Aspirating air passes into the base compartment through a pipe 46 and filter cloth 47, and flows in the direction of the arrows upwardly through the passages 1-8 and then radially inwardly through passages 13 controlled by butterfly valves 14 to an outlet 12. The inspection compartment 20 has transparent walls and a light source 23, and material flows through a tube 22 in this compartment to the uppermost screen compartment. Material not passing through the circular screen covering 33 flows through passages 38 in the inner annular compartment wall to one of the passages 1-8, whilst material passing through the screen falls through an opening 391 to the screen below. Material not passing this screen flows similarly to a different one of the passages 1-8, and so on. Each screen covering is attached to a ring 36, Fig. 3, placed over a collar 34 and held taut by a further ring 37 having an undulating inner surface. The various compartments are held together by stays 51, Figs. 2 and 3, and the assembly is attached to a framework 54, Fig. 3, by brackets 53 and screws 52. Fig. 4 shows two such assemblies mounted on a suspended framework 54 oscillated by a drive shaft 58 carrying weights 57.
