PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an engine system capable of performing a stable starting-up of an engine and making a size of an engine small and provide a saddle riding vehicle having this engine.SOLUTION: An engine system 200 comprises a single cylinder engine 10 and an ECU 6. At the time of starting an engine 10, a crank shaft 13 is rotated in a reverse direction by a starter and generator 14. A valve driving part 17 drives an intake valve 15 in such a way that the fuel injected by an injector 19 is guided from an intake passage 22 into a combustion chamber 31a through an intake port 21 at a first time in the period in which the crank shaft 13 is rotated in an inverse direction. After this operation, the mixture gas is ignited by a spark plug 18 under a state in which the mixture gas is kept to be compressed within the combustion chamber 31a through the inverse rotation of the crank shaft 13 and at a second time in which a piston 11 does not reach to a compressed top dead center.
