Disclosed is a process for manufacturing, without using a pore-forming agent, a positive electrode active material which has a desired porosity and a high open pore content and which can ensure high battery characteristics. This process includes: preparing a raw material hydroxide powder that comprises secondary particles which are each formed by the agglomeration of many primary particles having a composition represented by formula Ni1-yMy(OH)2 [wherein 0<y≤0.5 and M is at least one metal element selected from the group consisting of Co, Al, Mg, Mn, Ti, Fe, Cr, Zn and Ga] with at least some of the primary particles being arranged radially from the center of the secondary particle toward the outside thereof and that has a volume-based average diameter D50 of 4 to 40μm; pulverizing the raw material hydroxide powder into a powder having a volume-based diameter distribution such that the contents of particles having diameters of 10μm or larger, particles having diameters of 1 to 10μm, particles having diameters of 0.1 to 1μm are 10% or less, 30 to 90% and 10 to 70% respectively; preparing a slurry which contains the pulverized powder; making a nearly spherical granulated powder from the slurry; mixing the granulated powder with a lithium compound to form a lithium mixture powder; firing the lithium mixture powder to react the granulated powder with the lithium compound; and thus forming a positive electrode active material which is for use in a lithium secondary battery and which is provided with open pores. |
